What are the merits of the bolt-on toe stop design?

I will start out by saying that I don't use toe stops (TSs) currently and haven't used them for several years. I have been asked about skate recommendations by prospective skaters. I have been curious as to why there are bolt-on toe TSs on some skates. I don't see any advantage in having a bolt-on TS at all and I recommend new skaters to look for adjustable TSs whenever they can. Part of it is that my first boot had an adjustbale TS and in general, I like having the flexibility to change settings. Are there any virtues to the bolt-on that I haven't noticed? Are there some good engineering reasons that I haven’t considered?

Are bolt-on TSs more secure? Easier to manufacture? More durable (mechanically reliable)? Is it harder to incorrectly fasten a bolt-on TS?
